How to use the volume converter
Type a volume and choose the units. Kitchen measures here are US customary: a US cup is about 237 ml. Recipes from the UK, Australia and elsewhere often use a 250 ml metric cup, so check where the recipe comes from.
The formula
Every unit is defined in litres: result = value × (litres in the from-unit ÷ litres in the to-unit). A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres and a UK gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres.
Worked example
One US cup is 236.59 ml, so a recipe asking for 2 cups of milk needs about 473 ml.
Common questions
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No. The UK gallon is about 20% larger: 4.546 litres against 3.785 litres.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
There are 16 US tablespoons in a US cup, and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon.
How many millilitres are in a fluid ounce?
A US fluid ounce is about 29.57 ml.
