How to use the online calculator

Click the keys or type on your keyboard. The sum you are building shows on the top line and the answer appears underneath as you go. Press = or Enter to finish, and the calculation is printed on the tape beside the calculator. Click any line on the tape to bring that sum back.

The calculator follows the standard order of operations, so 2 + 3 × 4 gives 14, not 20. Use the bracket keys when you want part of a sum worked out first, for example (2 + 3) × 4.

The percent key

A percent sign after a number divides it by 100, so 50% is 0.5 and 200 × 15% is 30. When you add or subtract a percentage, it is taken from the number before it: 200 + 10% gives 220 and 80 − 25% gives 60. That makes price rises and discounts a single step.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Number keys, +, -, * and / enter the sum
  • Enter or = gives the answer
  • Backspace removes the last character
  • Esc clears everything
