How to use the tip calculator
Enter the bill, the tip percentage and how many people are sharing. With more than one person, the headline number is each person's share of the bill plus tip.
Tipping customs vary. In the United States 15% to 20% is usual in restaurants. In much of Europe and Asia a smaller tip, or none where service is already included, is normal. Check the bill for a service charge before you add one.
The formula
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100Each person pays = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people
Worked example
A 90 bill with a 20% tip: the tip is 18 and the total is 108. Split between three people, each pays 36.
Common questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional approach, though many people tip on the full total for simplicity.
What is a quick way to work out 20%?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For a 64 bill, 10% is 6.40 and 20% is 12.80.
What if we did not all order the same?
An even split is the simplest. For a fair split, work out each person's items and run the calculator once per person.
