How to use the final grade calculator
Enter your grade in the course so far, the overall grade you want, and how much of the course grade the final exam is worth. The result is the score you need on the final.
The two extra rows show the best and worst you can finish with, so you can tell at a glance whether your target is realistic.
The formula
Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
where w is the weight of the final as a decimal. Your work so far counts for the remaining share, 1 − w.
Worked example
You have 82% so far, want 85% overall, and the final is worth 30%. Your work so far contributes 82 × 0.70 = 57.4. The final must supply 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 points, which is 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92%.
Common questions
What if the answer is over 100%?
Then the target is out of reach on the final alone. Ask whether extra credit is available, or aim for the next grade down.
My grade so far is made of several parts. What do I enter?
Enter your current weighted average for everything except the final. Most learning platforms show this figure.
What if the answer is zero or negative?
You have already secured that grade, whatever happens in the exam.
