How to use the area converter
Type an area and choose the units. This is the conversion to reach for when comparing property listings, land sizes and flooring quantities given in different systems.
The formula
Every unit is defined in square metres: result = value × (m² in the from-unit ÷ m² in the to-unit). A square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m², an acre is 43,560 square feet and a hectare is 10,000 m².
Worked example
One acre is 4,046.86 m². A hectare is 10,000 m², so an acre is about 0.405 hectares.
Common questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply by 10.764. A 100 m² flat is about 1,076 square feet.
Why can I not just convert the side length?
Area scales with the square of length. There are 3.28 feet in a metre, but 3.28 × 3.28 = 10.76 square feet in a square metre.
