How to use the gPA calculator
Give each course its letter grade and the number of credits (or credit hours) it is worth. Use Add a course for more rows. A course with more credits pulls the average harder than a small one.
To see your overall GPA, fill in the GPA and total credits you had before this term. The calculator blends the two.
The formula
GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits
Grade points on the common 4.0 scale: A and A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.
Worked example
An A in a 3-credit course gives 4.0 × 3 = 12 points. A B+ in a 4-credit course gives 3.3 × 4 = 13.2. Together that is 25.2 points over 7 credits, a GPA of 3.60.
Common questions
Does every school use this scale?
No. Some give A+ a 4.3, some do not use plus and minus grades, and many countries use percentages or other bands. Check your own institution's table.
Do pass/fail courses count?
Usually not. Leave them out unless your school says otherwise.
What is a weighted GPA?
Some high schools add extra points for honours or advanced courses, so the scale goes above 4.0. This calculator is unweighted.
