How to use the speed converter
Type a speed and choose the units. Useful for speed limits when driving abroad, running and cycling paces, wind speeds in forecasts, and physics problems that need metres per second.
The formula
Every unit is defined in metres per second: result = value × (m/s in the from-unit ÷ m/s in the to-unit). One mile per hour is exactly 0.44704 m/s, and 1 km/h is 1 ÷ 3.6 m/s.
Worked example
60 mph × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h. Going the other way, 100 km/h is about 62 mph.
Common questions
How do I convert km/h to mph in my head?
Multiply by 0.6. So 100 km/h is roughly 60 mph (exactly 62.1).
What is a knot?
One nautical mile per hour, which is 1.852 km/h. It is used for ships, aircraft and wind.
How do I convert km/h to metres per second?
Divide by 3.6. A 36 km/h cycling speed is 10 m/s.
