$

Time worked

8 h 00 min

In decimal hours
8.00 hours
In minutes
480 minutes
Show the steps
  1. From 09:00 to 17:30: 8 h 30 min
  2. Take off the break: 8 h 30 min − 30 min = 8 h 00 min
  3. As a decimal: 480 minutes ÷ 60 = 8.00 hours

How to use the hours calculator

Enter when you started and finished. If the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator assumes you worked past midnight. Add any unpaid break in minutes, and your hourly rate if you would like to see the pay.

The decimal hours figure is the one to put on a timesheet or invoice: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours, not 7.30.

The formula

  • Time worked = end time − start time − break
  • Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60
  • Pay = decimal hours × hourly rate

Worked example

From 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes. Take off a 30 minute lunch and you worked 8 hours. At 20 an hour, that is 160.

Common questions

Work out each day, press Save to tape, then add the decimal hours together.
